Statement of Need: This 8-hour course is specifically designed to fulfill a requirement mandated in 2023 for all DEA-registered healthcare professionals nationwide who prescribe medications. Guided by Jeremy Mirabile, MD, ABPM-ADM, FASAM, MRO, practicing Addiction Medicine Physician and Medical Director of Recovery Keys rehabilitation treatment center, this comprehensive CME course presents the essentials on the disease of addiction and equips healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills necessary to better understand and manage patients with opioid and substance use disorders (SUDs). Dr. Mirabile is a proven leader of multidisciplinary teams in various substance abuse, psychiatric, and behavioral health treatment settings, including outpatient and residential centers. He is dedicated to educating medical students, other health professionals, and the public about the disease of addiction, including preventing substance abuse, identifying substance abuse, and the most current, evidence-based treatment strategies.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the DEA MATE CME Course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify addictive illnesses earlier, allowing for more effective intervention and treatment.
  2. Decrease the overall impact of addiction on the population, contributing to improved public health.
  3. Recognize and manage co-occurring mental disorders in the context of Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) and concurrent medical illnesses with SUDs.
  4. Understand emerging threats in opioids and the heightened risk for individuals with SUDs.
  5. Educate patients and their families on overdose prevention, promoting safer practices.
  6. Discuss best practices in pain management for patients with co-occurring substance use disorders, including a comprehensive understanding of buprenorphine’s pharmacology and clinical utility.
  7. Recognize the importance of inter-specialty communication in caring for patients with SUDs and utilizing state Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs).
  8. Review and implement addiction medicine-specific documentation required for treating and managing individuals with substance use disorders.
