Does insurance cover rehab for alcohol or drugs?
The good news is that oftentimes, yes, private insurance does cover or offset the costs of rehab for alcohol and drug dependency. Private insurance, also called commercial insurance, are plans typically offered through an employer or bought on health insurance exchanges.
Many health insurance plans cover the cost of the initial evaluation, detox, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), partial hospitalization programs (PHP), and outpatient programs to treat alcohol and drug addiction.

Will my employer find out about my struggle with drug and alcohol dependency if I use my employer-sponsored insurance to pay for rehab?
No, your employer should not find out about your substance use as a result of using company-sponsored insurance. Insurance companies aren’t permitted to inform your employer about any kind of medical treatment, including rehab for substance use. All health records, including those related to substance abuse treatment, are to remain confidential according to federal law. There are very few exceptions to this.
Is rehab worth the cost?
Although rehab for alcohol and drug abuse isn’t free, neither is substance use. Substance use disorders can be terribly costly. Men and women struggling with substance use disorders may experience job loss, get into car accidents and incur legal costs due to DUIs or child custody issues. Does outpatient drug and alcohol treatment cost less than residential rehab?
In a residential drug or alcohol rehab, patients reside in the rehab facility for the duration of treatment. In an intensive outpatient program (IOP) such as the programs offered at Recovery Keys, patients participate in therapy, counseling and other activities during the day, but can return home or to the home of a supportive family member or friend in the evenings to sleep.
Research has shown that intensive outpatient programs for substance use disorders provide vital support for helping an individual achieve and maintain sobriety, and learn coping skills to prevent relapse and manage stress, anxiety and co-occurring conditions such as depression without the use of drugs and alcohol. Intensive outpatient programs have also been shown to be as effective for most individuals as residential treatment.
Because intensive outpatient programs do not need to house patients overnight, the costs are typically less than for a residential rehab.
How does the Affordable Care Act impact insurance coverage for substance use?
Under the Affordable Care Act, also called the ACA or Obamacare, an individual seeking health insurance cannot be denied coverage or charged more for coverage as a result of pre-existing conditions, including alcoholism or drug addiction. That means a person who is struggling with an alcohol or drug use disorder can purchase insurance without worrying that seeking treatment for substance will prevent them from buying a policy now or in the future. Drug and alcohol disorders are included in the 10 elements of essential health benefits.
Further, the ACA and the 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act require that insurers cover mental health and substance use disorders treatment at a level similar to coverage for other types of medical and surgical services.
While in the past, treatment for substance use disorders was either not covered or was very limited, the ACA has “dramatically changed that picture.”
